Colonization, Enslavement, and Cross-Scale Ecological Change: Critical Quantification of Global Change
On Tuesday, November 7th, 2023, Critical Ecology Lab founder & Director, Dr. Suzanne Pierre delivered a Keynote address at the Society for Human Ecology’s 25th international Conference in Tucson, AZ.
From November 5th to 8th, Dr. Suzanne Pierre and Dr. Em Whalen from Critical Ecology Lab (CEL) participated in the Society for Human Ecology’s (SHE) 25th international gathering of environmental advocates and ecologists. The event featured keynote speeches, workshops, presentations, and discussions centered around the theme "Sowing Human Ecological Futures: Vision, Justice, and Diversity." With attendees hailing from over 20 countries across six continents, the conference provided a platform for building community, networking, and exchanging ideas. Participants shared their research, scholarship, and creative endeavors, generating numerous inspiring concepts.
Importantly, the conference provided an opportunity for CEL to spotlight its mission of transforming scientific research on a global scale. In her keynote address, Dr. Pierre shared how her journey as a Black scientist inspired the creation of our organization and outlined the core objectives of our primary research initiative, Ecological Scars of Plantation Slavery. This project delves into the study of soils affected by the Dutch sugarcane plantations in St. Croix, USVI.
We extend heartfelt thanks to all participants for their outstanding contributions to the conference, and we are grateful to SHE for facilitating this enriching event.
The Society for Human Ecology (SHE) is an international interdisciplinary professional society that promotes the use of an ecological perspective in research, education, and application. They host regular conferences, conducts workshops and symposia, and co-sponsors a variety of related activities to further integrate work among professionals in fields pertaining to human ecology. SHE is an affiliate of INTECOL (International Association for Ecology)~ and Ecological Society of America (ESA), with cross ties to the Human Ecology Section of ESA. SHE also works in a consortium with other national and regional human ecology organizations throughout the world. SHE publishes the online journal Human Ecology Review.
Critical Ecology Lab is a non-profit founded by Dr. Suzanne Pierre in 2020 to integrate the scientific and generational knowledge of oppressed communities to fight against social and planetary crises. They do this by facilitating informal education resources, creating novel scientific research, and activating communities towards climate action.
